Ep 07: Protein Shake For Your Mind, 2017 Automotive Predictions & Unilever CMO Keith Weed

img_3717

In this episode of The Ryan Holtz Show I talk about protein shakes for your mind, 2017 automotive marketing predictions and Unilever CMO Keith Weed. Since 2016 has left us, and 2017 is here. I smell an odour like no other, that is the odour of the Future. This is the time of year when many people make their new years resolutions with fitness being one of them. But what about your mind? What about your soul? If your mind and soul are healthy I am sure your body will follow. As many know, a niche market I have managed to carve out for my business is automotive and I strongly feel that in 2017 it is going to be fierce, competitive and scrappy as car buyers are getting more and more educated which forces the dealers and manufacturers to simply keep up. I am excited!

Have fun listening and what is your protein shake for your mind?

Uh oh! Beginning of The Trust Cycle: Using Social Media & Digital Marketing to Engage Your Customers

uh-oh

Uh Oh! Platforms, wires, people huddled together trying to get those extra few bars of battery life at the airport. This truly is the digital connection economy. Hopping on an airplane witnessing passenger reactions when flight attendants tell them no monitors are available to view shows. Their only option is to download the app and view on their laptop, iPad or smart phone device is sobering to say the least. For the “millennial” this is just normal life, but as a fellow entrepreneur and marketer, I wonder how they feel or how I would feel if I was in their position. Needless to say, this is our new reality, so let’s make the most of it.

When talking sales or execution of a marketing strategy, the funnel is always brought up. What people tend to forget is the way someone comes into the funnel has completely changed. They are entering the funnel wayyyyyy before they meet you, they are entering digitally on their own terms, in their own time. This is HUGE! Does social media sell and what the hell is the ROI? Well, those are great questions, but it is accurate to say that social media, search and display are the beginning stages of the trust cycle, so if you want to say hello to your customer, I suggest you get social and start building trust. By doing this, I do not mean come outta the gate swinging and asking them to buy your sh*t, but rather to establish some value and authority in your chosen space.

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube are known as social media networks, but make no mistake, they are platforms where people spend a ridiculous amount of time and breath on. We call these platforms, and there are three main stages to platforms: traction, maintaining and expansion. Out of these three, traction is the hardest. Think about trying to lose weight, hardest part is literally getting started. This is part of human nature, if we do not see immediate results or get the desired reactions from our pees, we often dismiss our initial reasons for starting out on the venture. Traction is social media or plat forming is no different as it takes time, dedication and constant thumb exercise. Hah did you get that joke? Are you thumbs hurting? I know mine are!

When tackling you’re your social media strategy for your real estate company or automotive dealership, think of it as a going on a date for the first time. The initial first 5 minutes of the interaction will often likely determine the outcome of what that encounter will look like as it goes on. Ask yourself how you can provide value and gain trust with your customer when making posts or curating your content. Remember, this is not a game, it is all about interacting with people! People are not dumb, they know when someone is trying to sell them, stop it! Seth Godin say’s it best, we are in a permission economy!

Get out there and build some trust!

Come say hi to me.

3 Reasons To Snapchat While Traveling | Amalfi Coast (Positano), Italy

Using Snapchat while traveling is a must! Recently, I was in the Amalfi Coast, Italy and had several people message me telling me certain places to visit and see. It really gave me a custom experience in my travels throughout Europe!

3 Snapchat tips:

1. Snapchat first thing in the morning telling people what your day looks like.
2. Ask your snapchat following a question like: “Where have you traveled?”
3. Try to add Geo-filters to the snapchat because it really authenticates where you have been!
4. Bonus tip: just follow me @RyanHoltz1

Overall, the beauty of snapchat is you can really get a different experience overall rather than just going somewhere. I had over 5,000 messages and snaps of people telling me where and what to experience. What ultimately was great, was local business in Europe that were locked into snapchat beefed up the experience tremendously!

Periscope: Change in Digital Marketing Communication and Mobile User Preference Especially In The Automotive Sector | Pros & Cons

Yes, Periscope is fairly new with about a 100 million users and slightly over one year old. This live streaming video service is a complete game changer. Just when we thought that mobile usage was already crazy, studies have shown that people seem to be living in their screens more then their own life and Periscope just takes it one step further. I would be foolish to not mention other live video streaming services such as Meerkat and Blab.

Literally being able to see people’s lives through their eyes, or should I say mobile phones is what Periscope offers. Not only is this amazing, but it is absolutely a huge marketing tool to connect and get in front of the right customer. Whether you are a tour guide and want to build a following using Periscope to give your virtual customer a tour of some of the most sought after places in the world or you are an auto dealership that is taking your “new owner nights” to epic proportions by sending out a friendly email to your customer data base through CRM that invites them to tune in as you will be showing them some basic car maintenance pointers, Periscope offers you endless options and in real-time.

Here are some basic pros and cons of live streaming with Periscope:

Pros:

1. LIVE and immediate interaction with your audience
2. Fun and highly addictive
3. Offers ability for you to have your own live virtual tv channel
4. Provides a platform for you to repurpose all of your content and use Periscope to put the little sprinkle on top
5. Immediate gratification

Cons:

1. USES a ton of data and battery power if not connected to Wifi
2. Not as popular in certain geographic areas. (Again, as an early adopter, this app is growing and becoming more and more prominent as live video streaming is here to stay.)
3. Certain functionalities of the app need improving like stopping the broadcast and switching the screen around
4. May cause a little anxiousness for people who are camera-shy but also kind of a good thing as it is good practice for you to dominate the stage!

As you can see, this app is worth checking out and giving it a whirl! I can tell you that doing a few scopes here and there has provided a increase to my blog subscribers and my overall digital footprint. Please check out the app and see what it can do for you and your business!

Any questions or comments, say hello to me here :)

Why Periscope Is A Must Digital Marketing Tool For Automotive Dealers in Canada!

PeriscopeImage

Bringing on the New year means having more digital marketing tools at your fingertips for auto dealers! Periscope which is a tool I was very uncertain about has won me over in an extreme way, so much that I did a automotive marketing workshop for The Motor Dealers Association of Alberta to cap off an amazing 2015! Reason I love Periscope is because of it’s instant capability to connect with people via your smartphone LIVE. As I was testing out Periscope, I was immediately addicted as I could watch live events, people completely wasting time or some dude smoking grass in Los Angeles, all with a click of a button!

That being said, Periscope is a data waster as roughly 30 minutes of a live periscope could set you back about 400 megabytes worth of data so unless you have an amazing data plan for your smart phone, I would test the waters while hooked up to wifi. The downside to this I can assure you is some of life’s greatest moments and experiences don’t happen on wifi, so you may find yourself pulling out your phone to catch all that stuff on Periscope. Not to be worries as I am sure periscope is working frantically to make their platform a little more efficient, but when you are streaming live video, it is what it is!

Auto Dealers can make use of Periscope by:

1. Vehicle walk arounds on new inventory
2. Behind the scenes of what really happens at a dealership such as pricing, staff training and service!
3. Can host new owner nights allowing past, present and future customers the ability to get educated on basic vehicle maintenance or the benefit of one of those lovely pro packs!
4. A virtual test drive allowing your audience to perhaps see that brand new Ford mustang or newly released vehicle that is not yet open to the general public.
5. How a car deal is actually done and what exactly the process is depending on the dealers level of transparency.

2016 is the year that General Managers, Sales managers and marketing personnel will have to shift their mindset in order to shift into a gear that will keep up with the customer. I really think that we are in exciting times with the technology that is literally at our fingertips!

Visit the iTunes app store or Google Play store to download the app and get your first scope going! Once you do, follow me @ryanholtz1 so I can tap the screen and show you some love!

If you have periscope, I would love to know what you think! Drop me a line here.

Guest Speaker For The New Brunswick Auto Dealers Association Annual General Meeting Along With Rick Gauthier, President of Canadian Auto Dealers Association

Photo 2015-11-12, 6 25 04 PMMy second time as a guest speaker for The New Brunswick Auto Dealers Association was great. Very thankful to be invited back for a second year in a row. Jane Young who is the Executive Director put on a marvellous event with meetings and speaker sessions in the afternoon and then an amazing Gala with entertainment from a hypnotist in the evening. I love attending these events as it gives myself a broader knowledge of the auto industry in Canada, not just from a marketing stand point, but as an industry in general.

Photo 2015-11-13, 10 58 41 AMI attended a close door dealer only meeting that had Rick Gauthier, President and CEO of The Canadian Auto Dealers Association giving some information and updating the dealer body on relevant and important items pertaining to the industry. The one statistic he mentioned was absolutely mind blowing in that the auto industry is a 160 billion dollar industry here in Canada which includes dealers, auto body and after market. The dealer portion is around a 100 billion which makes up for around 20% of retail sales in Canada. This industry is alive and well and offers so much diversity, happy to see more and more high performing people enter in.

Photo 2015-11-13, 12 50 48 PMFor my topic this year, I wanted to diversify a bit and not just talk about social media, but rather mindset and digital marketing for auto dealers as a whole. I created a presentation that was thought provoking but zoned in on specific examples that auto dealers in Canada face on a day to day basis.

David Brown, General Manager of Downey Ford introduced me and also sits on the board. He gave an amazing intro speech but most notable is how he mentioned sending one of his marketing people to my digital marketing workshops who was brand new to the auto industry coming from a newspaper background and managed to double their website page views after just one session, you can watch what he say’s in this video. Thanks David!

Photo 2015-11-13, 6 42 56 PMI want to wrap this note up by saying 2015 has been a monster year for the auto industry in terms of change and education.

Photo 2015-11-11, 2 04 18 PMOn my plane ride from Edmonton to Toronto was Premier Rachel Notley who I had to take a quick selfie with, super nice lady! Just goes to show that you never know who you will bump into at any given time! I am super humbled to have the clients I do, but also super excited for our industry moving into 2016. I think for people who are involved in our industry right now or thinking of coming in, there is not better time then now now to immerse yourself in it. So much change and possibility! See you soon!

My Keynote Presentation on Digital Marketing For The Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association of Canada in Las Vegas, Nevada at Bally’s Hotel & Casino

Photo 2015-10-01, 9 57 39 AM First off, thanks to Eleonore and Anita from the Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association of Canada for having me as their keynote speaker at this year’s convention hosted at The Bally’s hotel. Just like the automotive industry in general, auto dealers are starting to tackle the best strategy to engage their customers in their chosen format, the internet. Whether a customer is purchasing a $350,000 RV or a $20,000 vehicle, the scales are dramatically the same. The 2015 automotive customer is educated and highly motivated! This is great as the customer is doing their due diligence to find the perfect vehicle or RV that meets their needs. When looking at a basic sales funnel, we want to meet the customer when they are in their discovery phase as this gives us the best chance when they are ready to pull the trigger.

Photo 2015-11-04, 11 28 57 AM We had just around 100 people representing different Canadian RV dealers and companies in the room to take in some information on remarketing, digital marketing, social media and how to cultivate a marketing strategy that is sure to engage and attract the 2015 educated vehicle customer. We talked about:

  • Overall RV dealer digital strategy
  • Facebook remarketing
  • Internal process and who should be doing your marketing
  • How much money RV dealers should spend
  • How to tell your story in a digital landscape
  • Departmental digital marketing strategies

  • Photo 2015-11-03, 8 01 15 PMOverall it was a great morning with some amazing people going over future marketing ideas and really just having a round table. It is awesome to see the recreational vehicle industry here in Canada striving to new heights to better market themselves in the proper context that their customers require. In future, perhaps we will offer some recreational vehicle dealer digital marketing workshops to help work and train with staff.

Photo 2015-11-04, 9 57 04 AMIf you have any questions on how to marketing your dealership or would like to inquire about having me work with you and your team to develop and execute your digital marketing strategy, please contact me here.
